Named in 1901 by the area's first major developer, James Moore (of the Moore Theatre), Capitol Hill has long been one Seattle original destinations. Embracing the Olmstead-designed Volunteer Park, this crossroads of Seattle began as part hog farm, part logging operation, and a simple wagon road leading to one of the first city graveyards. Lake View Cemetery now entombs some of Seattle's best known names - the Maynards, the Dennys, the Learys and one Bruce Lee. In the early part of the last century, in what was the first of many marketing schemes to promote the hill, Mr. Moore plotted 14th Avenue with dozens of large opulent homes that quickly became known as Millionaire's Row. And as often happens, wealth begets wealth, and the surrounding environs were soon populated with similarly luxurious homesteads. The ensuing century has been largely kind to the massive homes and they still stand, stately as ever, as a testament to the continued vitality of Capitol Hill - and Seattle as a whole.
